Case Study: Apollo's Ground-Breaking Chemistry for Cost-Effective H2S Treatment in Permian Basin

Oil and gas producer operating in the Permian Basin Formation in West Texas, facing a critical challenge of dealing with high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in their sour crude oil and gas streams.

Client Background:

Acacia Energy Solutions was approached by an oil and gas producer operating in the Permian Basin Formation in West Texas, facing a critical challenge. The producer dealt with high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in their sour crude oil and gas streams. H2S levels ranged from a few ppm up to a staggering 150,000 ppm, and it was essential to reduce H2S to below pipeline specifications, typically less than 10 ppm for the oil stream and below 3% for the gas stream.

High H2S content not only diminished product value but also posed significant environmental, safety, and integrity risks for the company's assets.

The Solution: Apollo's New Gas/Oil Blend and Apcotane Ultra Lite

Acacia Energy Solutions proposed a two-step solution to address the H2S treatment challenge. The first step involved applying Apollo's new gas/oil blend to improve the H2S treatment efficiency in the comingled stream of oil and gas. By reducing H2S levels to below 3% in the gas phase, the company could make gas sales viable and meet pipeline specifications.

The second step involved utilizing Acacia Energy Solutions' Apcotane Ultra Lite product to treat the oil stream after separation and reduce H2S levels to zero, ensuring compliance with pipeline specifications and enhancing the value of the oil.

Treatment and Results:

Apollo's chemistry was introduced into the pipeline stream via one injection point, where the flow comprised roughly 10,000 barrels of oil per day and 10 MMCF of gas per day after a water knockout. The stream typically contained around 10% H2S and 6% CO2. With the implementation of Apollo's new blend, H2S levels in the gas phase were successfully reduced to 3%, and CO2 levels were lowered to 2% within about 100 feet of pipe.

The treatment process proved highly effective, as the producer could run the stream successfully for seven months without any issues. This enabled the producer to increase production and alleviate 50,000 lbs/S of sulfur and an additional 30,000 lbs of CO2 from their sulfur plant. Additionally, Apollo's treatment successfully dealt with spikes of H2S from wells, which could exceed 150,000 ppm, and still ensured the stream met sour pipeline specifications.

Ground-Breaking Chemistry for the Oil and Gas Industry:

Apollo's new gas/oil blend proved to be a game-changer for the oil and gas industry. By effectively and economically treating high H2S levels, both the oil and gas streams could be sold, and previously capped wells could now come online.

The solution not only improved the overall safety and integrity of the company's assets but also demonstrated Apollo's commitment to providing innovative and sustainable solutions for the energy industry.

Conclusion:

Acacia Energy Solutions' implementation of Apollo's new gas/oil blend and Apcotane Ultra Lite successfully addressed the client's challenge of cost-effective H2S treatment in the Permian Basin.

By reducing H2S levels below pipeline specifications, the company was able to enhance the value of their oil and gas streams, increase production, and alleviate environmental and safety risks. Apollo's ground-breaking chemistry showcased the potential for economically treating high H2S levels and unlocking new opportunities for the oil and gas industry in the Permian Basin.
